A taste of Switzerland with friends

We drove to Switzerland on Saturday 7th October and are now staying with Nicole who lived with Peter and I in NZ when she was an exchange student in 1999. It is really lovely to meet up with her again and also her family. On Sunday we went up into the Alps near Bern, driving through Interlaken and took a cog train up to Schynige Platte. There were a lot of people heading up the mountain as it was a beautiful day and it was the last day the train ran before it closed for the winter season.

We rode the train for fifty minutes and it took us up 1500 metres. At the top the most popular choice is to go trekking. Many of the people had the Nordic walking poles and were very serious about their walk. For the balance, which was a good mix of families and groups we all headed up the different tracks. We joined them. The walk was reasonably easy along gravel tracks.

This photo was taken about a third of the way up the mountain with a view of the Alps - Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau (which is commonly known as the Top of Europe)

The Swiss family were all very concerned that Peter wouldn't make it, so Garey decided that a little helping hand was required. It really wasn't necessary but oh well. In fact we all really enjoyed the walk which took about two hours with extra time part way through for our picnic lunch.

We made it!
